Allies of Joe Biden are urging voters to write him in on the 2024 New Hampshire primary election ballot, despite the fact that his name is not officially listed. This comes in response to a fake robocall that has been circulating, using artificial intelligence to mimic President Biden’s voice and discouraging voters from participating in the primary. The New Hampshire attorney general’s office has opened an investigation into the robocalls, which are suspected to have been artificially generated. This is a concerning development as it raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process and the potential manipulation of voters through advanced technology.
Concerns over Manipulation and Misinformation
The fake robocall, beginning with the phrase “What a bunch of malarkey,” specifically targets Democrats and advises them not to vote in the New Hampshire primary. The CEO of Nomorobo, a company that specializes in blocking robocalls, expressed concerns over scammers taking advantage of new technology to deceive and defraud people.
“This is what always happens,” Nomorobo’s CEO said. “Scammers jump on anything new that they can use to get a leg up to go in and rip off.”
As the investigation progresses, it is important to recognize the potential impact of AI-generated robocalls and deep fakes in the realm of politics. This incident serves as a stark reminder that advances in technology can be exploited to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion. It also highlights the need for robust measures to ensure the security and transparency of elections.
